Digital X-Rays Overview
Digital x-rays, also known as digital radiographs, are performed as part of a dental examination to allow a better view of your mouth. Digital x-rays allow experienced dentist Dr. James Peterson to diagnose issues that are not easily visible and to learn about the health of the inside of your teeth, jaw, and gums. There are many dental concerns that can be seen on x-rays, such as cavities, decay, cysts, abscesses, impactions, and bone loss. When these issues are identified early, they may have more treatment options that are less invasive. During your annual dental examination at James Peterson Family & Cosmetic Dentistry in Coppell, TX, digital imaging will help Dr. Peterson diagnose and treat oral health problems.

Best Candidates for Digital X-Rays
In most cases, digital imaging are a part of an annual dental exam. They can be administered for prevention or if you are experiencing a specific problem. Though digital x-rays use less radiation than traditional film x-rays, James Peterson Family & Cosmetic Dentistry tries to minimize each patient's exposure. While they are generally safe for any patient, women who are breastfeeding or pregnant should inform Dr. Peterson at the beginning of the dental exam so special precautions can be taken.
What to Expect with Digital X-Rays
Generally completed at the beginning of your appointment, digital x-rays take about 5 – 10 minutes to complete. Most patients will have a series of x-rays taken to include all sections. After they are complete, they are uploaded and can be viewed by you and Dr. Peterson during your exam. He can assess if there are any issues and talk about possible treatments.
Digital X-Rays Follow-Up
A series of x-rays will usually be taken annually at your dental exam. At some visits, a whole mouth series may be needed to get a complete view of the teeth, gums, and oral bones. Your x-rays will be saved with other information at James Peterson Family & Cosmetic Dentistry so Dr. Peterson can identify changes over time and chart any growing concerns.
Digital imaging is a useful technology that can help diagnose and treat health conditions. As a part of a regular dental exam, they are able to give Dr. Peterson an in-depth view that allows him to catch hidden problems to be treated before becoming painful.
