Digital X-Rays

Precise Digital Imaging in Coppell, TX

During your annual dental examination at James Peterson Family & Cosmetic Dentistry in Coppell, TX, digital imaging will help Dr. Peterson diagnose and treat oral health problems.

We use Digital X-rays, also known as digital radiographs, during your dental examination to get a better view of your mouth. Digital X-rays allow Dr. James Peterson to diagnose issues that are not visible with the naked eye and learn more about the health of your teeth, jaw, and gums.

Various dental concerns can be seen on X-rays that aren’t always apparent during a visual examination, such as:

  • Cavities
  • Decay
  • Cysts
  • Abscesses
  • Impactions
  • Bone loss

When these issues are identified early, you may have more and better treatment options to choose from.

About Digital X-Rays

In most cases, digital imaging is already a part of your annual dental exam. A digital X-ray can be administered for preventative purposes or to provide more information if you are experiencing a specific problem. Digital X-rays use significantly less radiation than traditional film X-rays, making them much safer for you and for our team. While digital imaging is generally safe for any patient, women who are breastfeeding or pregnant should inform us before your dental exam so we can take special precautions.

What To Expect

Generally completed at the beginning of your appointment, digital X-rays take about 5-10 minutes to complete. You will normally have a series of X-rays taken that includes all sections of your mouth. After the X-rays are complete, we upload them so that you and Dr. Peterson can look at them together during your exam. Dr. Peterson will use the images to determine if there are any issues and talk to you about available treatment options.

A series of X-rays will normally be taken annually at your annual dental exam. At some visits, a whole mouth series may be needed to get a complete view of your teeth, gums, and facial bones. Your X-rays will be saved with other information to provide a record or your oral health over time, allowing Dr. Peterson to more easily identify changes and chart any growing concerns.
