Same-Day Crowns

Natural-Looking Restorations in Coppell, TX

If one tooth is damaged or worn down, it can be protected with a dental crown. Also known as a cap, a crown is custom made to fit over your tooth and colored to match your surrounding teeth for a seamless appearance. At James Peterson Family & Cosmetic Dentistry in Coppell, TX, we use dental crowns to treat a large area of decay, protect a weak tooth, restore a cracked tooth, or cover a discolored tooth. Dr. James Peterson offers dental crowns with different materials to match your specific needs.

CEREC® Same-Day Crowns

Restorations by CEREC at James Peterson Family & Cosmetic Dentistry help you complete your restorative or cosmetic dental treatment in a single visit. With CEREC’s advanced digital technology, you can avoid messy physical impressions and temporary covers. CEREC restorations can also be beneficial if you have a dental emergency, such as a cracked crown or tooth.

CEREC procedure starts with a consultation so Dr. Peterson can create your unique treatment plan. The process requires a digital scan of your mouth, which will help Dr. Peterson design your restoration. From there, your restoration is sent to the CEREC machine to be fabricated. The amount of time it will take to create your restoration will be dependent on the size. Once the restoration is created, Dr. Peterson finishes and polishes the piece before cementing it in place. He can then fix the restoration so it is comfortable and blends in perfectly with your natural teeth.

Who is a Candidate for a Crown?

Crowns are useful in a variety of situations, including:

  • Protecting a weak, decaying tooth to keep it from breaking
  • Holding together a cracked tooth
  • Fixing a loose or worn-down tooth
  • Supporting a tooth with a large cavity that cannot hold a normal filling
  • Holding a dental bridge in place
  • Masking misshapen or discolored teeth.

Crowns can be cemented on or attached to a dental implant. The material for the crown is selected based on the location of the tooth. Porcelain or ceramic crowns are better for the front teeth and customized to match the shape, color, and size of your natural teeth. During your consultation, Dr. Peterson will discuss your options and help you select the best crown for your needs.

What To Expect

At your consultation, Dr. Peterson will take digital impressions of your teeth so the crown can be custom made. If needed, a temporary crown can be placed over your tooth while your custom crown is being made. Once your crown is ready, Dr. Peterson will prepare the tooth by removing debris and decay, then file it down to make room for the crown. The crown will be cemented onto the tooth or attached to the dental implant. Once set, Dr. Peterson will adjust the fit so your bite is correct and feels natural.

Recovery & After Care

Dr. Peterson or a member of his team will talk to you about the best way to care for your crown, including which foods to avoid and the best way to keep it clean. During your annual exams at James Peterson Family & Cosmetic Dentistry, Dr. Peterson will check your crown and adjust the fit for comfort if needed. He will determine when the crown needs to be replaced, but with proper care, it should last for many years. If you have any issues with your crown (it becomes loose or falls out), contact our office right away.
