Approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as a Class I medical device, the VPro5 is part of Propel's lineup of orthodontic products. It is a mouthpiece that speeds bone movement by creating micropulses, causing the aligners to work better and quicker. This device speeds up treatment time by nearly 50%, which is quite appealing to those who have to wear aligners for 12 – 18 months. It is also less invasive than other accelerating treatments.
A MOPs procedure with the Propel Excellerator may be recommended by Dr. Peterson if you have an open bite, crossbite, a deep bite, crowded teeth, or large gaps between your teeth. During your initial orthodontic consultation, Dr. Peterson will discuss adding the Propel Excellerator to your regular treatment for faster teeth movement.
When you have completed your orthodontic consultation and your Invisalign is in place, you will be given a VPro5 device that can be used in your home. The VPro5 should be worn for five minutes 1 – 2 times every day. In case you decide to wear the device twice a day, allow yourself time between sessions. When you are ready to use the VPro5, simply set the mouthpiece into your mouth, bite down, and press the power button. A light will flash, which indicates the start of the session. Once the session is done, a light will flash again. Then, you'll remove the device from your mouth.
The Propel Excellerator creates manual micro-osteoperforations, also known as "dental dimples." The micro-osteoperforations stimulate blood flow and cytokines to the treated area that help bone remodeling and tooth movement. Used with braces or removable aligners, the Propel Excellerator can shorten treatment time and helps to decrease discomfort.
Your MOPs treatment can be performed during your regular appointment. First, Dr. Peterson will have you rinse your mouth with chlorhexidine (an antiseptic). Once your mouth is clean and prepared, Dr. Peterson will use the Excellerator to create dental dimples at the appropriate depth for your needs. The process should only take a few minutes.
It is important that you thoroughly wash your mouthpiece after each treatment to ensure proper oral hygiene. Some patients reported that the VPro5 helped ease the strain they felt with their aligners.
A single treatment with Propel Excellerator is usually enough for most patients; however, some patients may need multiple treatments.
