Advanced Laser Treatments
Having healthy gums is important because conditions like oral cancer and gum disease are detrimental to your oral health and your overall well-being. At James Peterson Family & Cosmetic Dentistry, we use cutting-edge laser technology to treat a variety of periodontal (gum) issues. Our high-powered laser helps Dr. James Peterson treat the advanced stage of gum disease (periodontitis) more efficiently and with less discomfort for the patient. Dr. Peterson also uses laser technology to perform oral biopsies to find pre-cancer and cancer in the mouth. Additionally, a laser gum treatment can be part of a smile makeover to help reshape the gums and change the look of a “gummy” smile. Best Candidates for
Laser Gum Treatment
There are several situations in which a laser gum treatment could be beneficial. If you have gum disease, the laser removes bacteria and plaque that is deep in the pockets of the gum tissue. During a biopsy, the laser is used to remove abnormal tissue. Laser treatment also works to eliminate excess gum tissue if you wish to change the aesthetics of your smile. When compared to classic gum surgery, laser treatments are less invasive and do not require stitches, so your gums heal faster.
What To Expect
Your laser gum treatment will be performed right in our office. Before your procedure, Dr. Peterson will go over exactly what you should expect during the treatment process, whether you are being treated for gum disease, getting an oral biopsy or undergoing crown lengthening or cosmetic gum contouring. The laser minimizes the need for more invasive treatment techniques, which means less discomfort, swelling, and bleeding, as well as less healing time.
Recovery & After Care
Dr. Peterson will provide you with recovery instructions before you are discharged to go home. For gum disease treatment or crown lengthening, you may have to schedule a follow-up appointment so Dr. Peterson can assess your healing and decide if another treatment is necessary. If a biopsy was conducted, you may need to come back into our office to receive your results. If oral cancer is diagnosed, Dr. Peterson will go over your treatment options and next steps.
