Extra Protection for Your Teeth
Fluoride’s importance to oral health has been proven by the American Dental Association (ADA), the World Health Organization (WHO), the American Medical Association (AMA), and several other professional health organizations. Communities that add fluoride to their water supply have fewer problems with cavities and tooth decay. Fluoride is a natural mineral found in the earth and some foods that strengthens bones and teeth. Professional fluoride treatments at James Peterson Family & Cosmetic Dentistry in Coppell, TX can help children with developing teeth and adults with damaged tooth enamel to restore their oral health. Best Candidates for
Fluoride Treatments
Fluoride treatments are suitable for patients of all ages, though younger patients whose teeth are developing or who have not yet developed good oral hygiene habits stand to benefit the most. Dr. Peterson also recommends fluoride treatments for adult patients who do not have a fluoridated water supply or are prone to cavities. James Peterson Family & Cosmetic Dentistry provides different fluoride formulas for specific needs, including neutral sodium fluoride if you have dry mouth and acidulated phosphate fluoride if you have dental restorations (crowns and bridges). There are also different flavors to make these treatments easier for younger and older patients.
What to Expect
We typically provide a fluoride treatment every six months with your semiannual dental cleaning. You get to select the flavor, and a team member will prepare the treatment as a foam, a gel, or a paint-on varnish. You need to leave the fluoride on your teeth for several minutes to allow it time to penetrate the enamel. The hygienist will use suction to help clear your mouth after the treatment, but you cannot rinse your mouth, eat, or drink for at least 30 minutes afterwards.
In some cases, Dr. Peterson may recommend fluoride supplements for you or your child to take at home. While these treatments help to strengthen tooth enamel, you should continue or establish a good home oral care routine, including brushing twice a day with a fluoridated toothpaste and flossing at least once every day. We also highly recommend committing to regular professional exams and cleanings at James Peterson Family & Cosmetic Dentistry so Dr. Peterson can monitor your oral health and your need for fluoride treatments.
