Nitrous Oxide

Relax at Your Next Dental Appointment

Provided by Dr. James Peterson at our Coppell, TX facility, nitrous oxide (N2O) gas is a proven sedation technique that helps you safely relax during any procedure. Commonly known as laughing gas, N2O is used to keep you comfortable but not put you to sleep.

Best Candidates for Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide is a very popular sedation technique that is safe to use on children and adults alike. Prior to administering nitrous oxide, Dr. Peterson will go through your current medications, medical history, and concerns to ensure nitrous oxide gas is a good choice for you. Nitrous oxide sedation may be used for any type of procedure in conjunction with local anesthesia. However, it may not be right for you if you have difficulty breathing through your nose, extreme anxiety, or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or a condition that affects your breathing.

What To Expect

Before a procedure begins, the nitrous oxide will be administered using small mask that fits over your nose. As you inhale the gas, it will quickly begin to start relaxing you. Dr. Peterson or a member of his team will monitor your health and your response to the gas. Adjustments will be made as necessary throughout the procedure to keep you relaxed. After the procedure is complete, the gas will be turned off, and the effects should quickly wear off.

Recovery & After Care

Recovery from N2O sedation is usually immediate, as the gas is eliminated in around three minutes. You should be able to drive and resume your normal activities when you leave our office. Do not hesitate to contact our staff if you have any questions or concerns. Dr. Peterson suggests you eat a light meal before your procedure and then wait approximately three hours after you leave before having a heavy meal.
