3D Impressions Overview
Having impressions of your teeth used to be considered a long and sometimes uncomfortable process. Physical impressions require you to bite into a mold for lengthy periods of time, which is problematic for patients with a powerful gag reflex. This is why experienced dentist Dr. James Peterson is proud to offer you a modern alternative to molds with 3D impressions. Using the advanced technology of iTero intraoral cameras, 3D (also known as digital) impressions take precise scans of your teeth. This makes it possible for us to create an accurate model of your teeth that can be employed to create dental restorations, like implants, crowns, orthodontics, dentures, and more. If you are in need of restorative dental work, avoid the stress and time of physical molds with 3D impressions at James Peterson Family & Cosmetic Dentistry in Coppell, TX.

Best Candidates for 3D Impressions
3D impressions are excellent for patients of all ages who have a strong gag reflex and/or people who want to avoid the stress of impressions. Dr. Peterson employs 3D impressions in case you need a custom restoration, such as crowns, bridges, dentures, or removable aligners (like Invisalign). 3D impressions are excellent for creating precise digital models of your teeth that can be sent directly to a dental laboratory or in-office CEREC machine.
What to Expect with 3D Impressions
During this procedure, you will sit in the treatment chair while Dr. Peterson passes the small iTero scanning wand around your mouth. This tool employs blue wavelength light to precisely capture all areas, corners, and crevices of your teeth. After the scanning is done, a model of your teeth will appear on the monitor. If any areas were missed during the initial scan, an easy re-scan can be administered to catch the needed areas, rather than using dental molds, which would require the entire process to be repeated.
3D Impressions Follow-Up
Once your digital scans have been completed, they will be sent to a dental lab or our in-office CEREC machine. Once your restoration or orthodontic device has been made based on your digital scans, Dr. Peterson will be able to complete your treatment. He will keep your scans with your file. This will make it easier if you need another restoration and to compare changes in your teeth.
