Best Candidates for Fluoride Treatment
Fluoride treatments can be given to patients of all ages, though it is typically given to younger patients whose teeth are developing or who have not developed good oral hygiene habits. Dr. Peterson also recommends fluoride treatments for adult patients who do not have a fluoridated water supply or who are prone to cavities. James Peterson Family & Cosmetic Dentistry provides different fluoride formulas if you have specific needs, including neutral sodium fluoride if you have dry mouth and acidulated phosphate fluoride if you have dental restorations (crowns and bridges). There are also different flavors to make these treatments easier for both younger and older patients.
What to Expect with Fluoride Treatment
Fluoride treatments are generally performed every six months after your dental cleaning. When you select your flavor, a team member will prepare the treatment as either a foam, gel or paint-on varnish. It will be left on for several minutes to allow the fluoride time to penetrate the enamel before it can be spat out. The hygienist will use suction to help clear your mouth after the treatment, but you cannot rinse your mouth, eat, or drink for at least 30 minutes after.
Fluoride Treatment Follow-Up
In some cases, Dr. Peterson may recommend fluoride supplements for you or your child to take at home. While these treatments help to strengthen the enamel, you should continue or establish a good home oral care routine, including brushing with a fluoridated toothpaste and flossing. You should also attend your scheduled professional exams and cleanings at James Peterson Family & Cosmetic Dentistry so Dr. Peterson can reassess your need for fluoride treatments.
